1. Linear charging external battery charger: it adopts pure resistance current limiting or charge management chip to reduce voltage. It reduces input 5V voltage directly to voltage required by the battery, and limits current through audion amplifier or comparator amplifier inside the chip. It enjoys the advantages of short development period and quite high success rate.

Disadvantages

First, this line achieves purpose of voltage reduction and charging through the linear stable voltage constant current for the excess energy consumption. The temperature is very high and the charging current can not be large. That is because the larger the charging current is, the greater the energy consumption will be and the larger the heat radiating area will increase.

Second, the rechargeable battery of this line is easy to polarize. The larger the charge current is, the greater the polarization area will become, and the lower the capacity will be. After a long time, the battery will lack of capacity. The best way to reduce polarization is to charge after using up the battery power. Reducing the times of battery charging is to longer the battery life (polarization refers to that the oxides accumulation hampers electrons migration). Linear portable external battery charger normally has three processes: constant current, constant voltage, and trickle charging.

2. Pulse portable external battery charger: it uses CMOS electronic switch, reducing voltage and charging by constant current through controlling the switch, also called PWM control charger. During the control process, gets data from CPU port detection for calculation, feedback and adjustment of PWM width and frequency to complete the charging process. Its disadvantage is that this line technique is very complex. Pulse external charger typically has four processes: trickle charge constant current, express charge constant current, trickle charge with repairing.

This line controls current by electronic switch, which is theoretically lossless, low temperature, and fast charging, because low temperature is easy to reach the fast charging purpose.

Second, long battery life 

To prevent causing polarization affecting life of the battery during the charging process, it use pulse-type charging with rest repair process, getting better throughout the charging process of the battery power absorption.
